Script

Police 1: “The subject has killed 3 people so far, damn it this is getting out of hand!”

*Drops a pile of paper onto a desk*

Police 2: “All of victims have had some relation with the subject”

Police 1: “What kind of links are we looking at here? Friends? Family?”

*Police 2 shakes his head*

Police 2: “No, look at this. The killer has been implementing the use of home items as weapons. Makes them almost impossible to trace. However it does tell us about how he works”.

Police 1: “Meaning?”

Police 2: “Meaning he kills closer to home than he should.”

*Look at each other*

Detective 1: “Here’s some key evidence from the scene”

*Presents the glass in a bag*

Police 1:  “right we can work with this”

Detective 1: “Subject 1 male 20 years of age 178cm Caucasian brown hair, stabbed with improvised bladed tool, possibly glass shard, currently unidentified.”

“Subject 2 male, 19 190cm Caucasian brown hair, viciously strangled to death, likely that he bleed to death rather than lack of oxygen.”

“Subject 3 Caucasian male 188cm blonde, spine completely severed from base of the skull, heavy impact damage. Hard to believe it but the autopsy indicated he used his bare hands.”

“Final subject, female 18 Caucasian 167cm tall, blonde except this time her head was completely caved in, indicating that the killer used a blunt tool, possibly a metal instrument of some kind.”

Police 1: “Looking at the evidence our prime subject has to be” ‘characters Name’, “having a relation with the women killed in the crash nearly 2 months ago.”

LO2: Certification

This is a trailer rating which would be 15. As there is only implied killing, minimal blood and no swearing or sexual content. Therefore this trailer would be 15.

To pass for an 18 rated film it would need to have the following:
  • very strong violence
  •   frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***') and / or very strong language (e.g. ‘c***’)
  •   strong portrayals of sexual activity
  •   scenes of sexual violence
  •   strong horror
  •   strong blood and gore
  •   real sex (in some circumstances)
  •   discriminatory language and behavior

LO2: Feed back

I think that the feedback we got from the rushes is good but there are still somethings that we can work on. most of the questions got a positive reply but question 3 showed that the audience watching the trailer are having trouble following. I think that we could improve by adding features that would make it easy to follow the footage, we could add text to give the audince clues or hints to what is happening.

LO1: Task 2 Analysis of audio-visual promos - Film Trailer (The Conjuring)

Purpose - The purpose of this trailer is to advertise the film towards the target audience. There is also they purpose of matching the trailer towards the film, so if the film is going to try and scare the audience if it is a horror then the trailer has to have the same effect to make the audience want to go see the film. So in the case the trailer has to be scary and chilling without revealing any important bits of the story.

form - The form of this audio visual promo is a film trailer. This form is used to show small parts of the film that the audience will be interested in and put them together to advertise the film. it is also used to advertise the produces and companies behind the film and to give the target audience an idea about the story line of the film.

content - The content of this trailer matches the genre that the trailer is set for. For example if you look at the setting in the trailer it is in the house in the middle of no where which stays with in the stereotypical idea of a horror film because if something happened to the characters then there is no one around to help them. other contents of the film is the props in it, the film is set in 1971 so you see the use of a match for a source of light in part of the trailer but if it was set in modern day, i would expect the characters to use a phone screen or flash. This shows us that it has been set before the present day and is important to the audience.

meaning - The director has used different camera angles and editing effects to have a unique outcome for the final trailer. The director has used a lot of wide and long shots in this trailer so for the audience it would be easy to see if something was behind the characters, that the characters wouldn't know about. For example in the part when the mother goes into the room and we see the wardrobe slowly open in the background, this creates suspense for the audience but the character doesn't know any different. The use of black in the editing is also effective. I think that it is used because we relate the darkness to scary because you cant see whats in the dark and it relates to the horror genre well.

genre - the genre of this film trailer is horror because the film it is advertising is also horror so it has to stay with in the same genre. We know that the genre is horror because of the content with in the trailer. For example the use of music and sound effects and editing. I think that one of the ways you can tell the genre of the trailer is the colours and lighting used, in this trailer the shadows are used well so it looks dark and old and scary, but if it was a comedy there would be a use of bright colours and lighting

audience - The target audience are 18 and above due to it been rated R which means that some parts are to disturbing for younger people even though younger people will watch it. The target audience for this film will be lovers of the horror genre and like to get scared. people that are interested in films such as paranormal activity and others.

LO1: Task 2 Analysis of audio-visual promos - Film Trailer (Non-Stop)

Purpose - the purpose of this trailer is to advertise the film so the target audience will want to go see it. The purpose could also be to advertise the company that been producing the film such as universal or Warner bros etc. to cause brand recognition for the company to advertise other films that the company has produced. It could even be publicity for the actors in the film to get them further roles in other films in a similar or the same genre.

form - The form of this audio visual promo is a film trailer. This form is used to show small parts of the film that the audience will be interested in and put them together to advertise the film. it is also used to advertise the produces and companies behind the film and to give the target audience an idea about the story line of the film.

content - the content of the film trailer stays with in the genre that it is set in. For example if you look at the properties in the trailer we can see things such as a police badge, a bomb and a gun. When the audience sees them in this trailer they will know or guess that is is an action/thriller film and will expect other things with in this theme.

meaning - I think that the mise en scene tells us about the sort of film that this is. For example the setting of the film is on a plane stuck in the air and no one can get out, which keeps someone on the edge of there seat just as a director of a thriller film would want. I also think that the use of close ups are important to the trailer, for example the watch and gun when i see those in the trailer i know straight away that he's racing against time for some reason and there will be danger. This can keep the audience interested and wanting to see the full film.

genre - The genre of this film is action/thriller, i think this because of the well known actor that also stars in other thrillers and the content with in the trailer such as racing against time and weapons. I can also tell that the genre is action/thriller from the editing and lighting the use of shadows in the plane makes it look darker and mysterious which goes well with the genre.

audience - the target audience for this film will be people that love this type of genre, for example people that love films such as taken will want to watch this film. Another reason the audience would watch this film is the main actor in it. The film is rated PG-13 so most of the target audience will be older teenager and adults with some younger teenagers.

LO1: Task 2 Analysis of audio-visual promos - Film Trailer (Sinister)

Purpose - the purpose of this trailer is to advertise the film so the target audience will want to go see it. The purpose could also be to advertise the company that been producing the film such as universal or Warner bros etc. to cause brand recognition for the company to advertise other films that the company has produced. It could even be publicity for the actors in the film to get them further roles in other films in a similar or the same genre.

form - The form of the audio visual promo is a trailer. a trailer is when parts of the film that can show the story or meaning are put together to have the same effect as the film towards the audience. the editor would choose parts of the film that are scary to put them all together to scare the audience so they will want to see the film. And will give the audience an idea of the story line to the film.

content - The content of this trailer are very stereotypical to the genre that it is in. For example in unknown items that have been left in an empty house that have obviously been there for a while. This is something similar which you would see in this genre but it could be an old doll etc, which makes the audience understand what genre it is and what its about.

meaning - The mise en scene and camera angles and editing tell you a lot about the story and meaning behind a lot of things in the film. For example the lighting used in the trailer will make things come across more scary than they would in day light. Or the fast cut editing could keep the audience interested and trying to catch what is happening. The set of the trailer can also show some meaning to the story and make the audience think, for example some viewers could think about why they have moved houses? was there an issue with the previous house or are they running?

genre - the genre of this film trailer and film is Horror/Thriller the purpose of this genre is to keep the audience entertained as best as possible. instead of just watching a film that you just sit there watch horrors and thrillers pull the audience in and get them involved by either being sat on the edge of there seat or in the the back of there seat behind a pillow. The trailer has ironical items to represent genre for example the blood and fire could hint the genre to the audience.

audience - the target audience for this trailer are people that love horrors/thriller films and have watched other films like this, they could also be viewers that are interested in the actors that are in the film. The film is rated R so the target audience would be primarily 18 and above up to about the age of 60 becuase i cant imagine anyone older than that being interested in this type of film.

LO1: Task 2 Analysis of audio-visual promos - Film Trailer (into the storm)

Purpose - The purpose of this trailer is to advertise the film and actors and company to the public and viewers.

This form is used to show small parts of the film that the audience will be interested in and put them together to advertise the film. it is also used to advertise the produces and companies behind the film and to give the target audience an idea about the story line of the film.

content - The content of this trailer and tell the audience what the film is about. It does this with a use of editing and setting etc. The setting in this trailer tells us that the story is set in america and could start of in a school. It also keeps the audience interested because at the start of the trailer they rush inside from the rain but it could be from anything, a storm or monster or invasion just like other films. This keeps a bit of mystery to the story and in turn keeps the audience interested.

meaning - Looking at the trailer i can see meaning behind the directors choice of shots and mise en scene for example the first bit of the trailer is set in a school with plenty of people to be in danger instead of just a couple of people in a house somewhere. Some of the shots in the trailer have been done for a reason because they are shaky and unstable but i think this is to make it look like you are part of the film and can see from someones eyes that are there. part of the trailer has a teacher guiding students through the hall and its a mid shot teaching tracking him from behind and it looks like you are a student following him.

genre - the genre of this film is more than action thriller instead of horror thrillers like some of the other trailers I have analysed. Whilst some thrillers have fictional things in to scare the audience this is a different sort of genre were the story is based on fact instead of fictional things. I think that this can have a different effect on the audience because they viewers can realise that that could actually happen which can come across scarier than fictional thrillers.

audience - the audience for this film will be people that are interested in films with other natural disasters in such as 2012 or Pompeii. Also the film is rated PG-13 so anyone younger is either not aloud to see it or wouldn't be bothered about it. I think that it is more of a teenager/ adult film because i don't think that child would have an interest in films about the weather compared to films about super heros.

LO1: Task 2 Analysis of audio-visual promos - Film Trailer (Lucy)

Purpose - the purpose of this trailer is to advertise the film so the target audience will want to go see it. The purpose could also be to advertise the company that been producing the film such as universal or Warner bros etc. to cause brand recognition for the company to advertise other films that the company has produced. It could even be publicity for the actors in the film to get them further roles in other films in a similar or the same genre.

form - The form of this audio visual promo is a film trailer. This form is used to show small parts of the film that the audience will be interested in and put them together to advertise the film. it is also used to advertise the produces and companies behind the film and to give the target audience an idea about the story line of the film.

content - the content of the trailer matches the genre that is it set in. In the trailer you see men in suits trying to sneak drugs by hiding it inside people, The suits as a costume make me think that they are a mafia type people which tells us that here is going to be more than one side to the storyline for example for there to be bad guys there has to be good guys so with the police chasing the bad guys and the action adds together to make it a successful action/thriller.

meaning - Some of the camera shots in the trailer give different effects to the trailer which makes the trailer a lot more successful towards the target audience and genre. For example we see what is important through close ups like the drugs inside the main character and a few close ups of hers eyes when you see her change. the director has paid close attention to detail which gives the viewers an idea of the story.

genre - The genre of this film is action/thriller. I think this is because of the editing in the trailer and the sound effects. the deep sounds that happen with the action in the trailer match other trailers that are with in this genre. I also think that it is with in this genre because the main actress has been in other thriller action films so the audience would expect a similar genre to previous films she has starred in.

audience - the target audience for this film will be people that are interested in the genre of the film and people that are interested in the actors and actresses that star in in it. I also think that the target audience will be the people that are interested in a similar style of film for example a fictional film or a superhero theme.

LO1: Task 1 Analysis of audio-visual promos - Idents

Purpose - the purpose if this is to advertise the topic which would be, doctor who and the BBC. And in turn sell the show to the audience by fitting it into a Ident that everyone will see. I think that it is also to put something unique on the BBC channel to make people more interested in the show and channel and to overall entertain the viewers. I think that it could also be about making the viewers think about the show and what is going on in the advert, and have an overall effect on the audience pulling them into the channel and show.

Form - the form of the audio visual promo is a Ident. an ident is basically a mini advert that industries use to advertise there own merchandise. The BBC have made small idents to advertise there own company with in 30 seconds that the audience can watch between shows. This ident is to advertise a show with in the BBC so the ident has been produced to have one with the other. The BBC have used one of the ident they have already produced and blended it with an ident from doctor who to cause branding recognition and advertisement.

Content - The content of this ident is the is a ident that has already been made by the BBC and then it has a glitch effect and then we can see the doctor who set with the Doctor talking to us. I like the glitch effect in this ident because i think it is supposed to look like the doctor is hacking into the ident and telling the audience about something and therefore producing an example of brand recognition.  With in the Ident there is also the jingle that is used in other idents that BBC have in other idents. This is also been edited to fit with in the theme of doctor who and the a glitch effect with in the show which again could bring attention from the audience to the ident.

Meaning - the different use of shots in the Ident mean different things towards the audience for example in the part of the ident when it cuts to the Doctor it is a low angle shot looking down at him. This can connote power to the the person in the shot, it can also show importance to them and if the person in the shot is has dialogue then the audience will remember what he is saying. the Mise en scene in this shot also makes a difference towards the audience  because if you look at the doctors props and costume you can see that he is wearing a watch this creates a sort of ironic comedic effect because anyone that watches the show would know that he is a time traveler, why would someone that can have an effect on time and can travel through time want a watch?

Genre - The genre of this ident is science fiction. We know this because of the content in the of the ident when the camera pulls away from the ground slowly we see that there is a crop circle looking pattern in the grass, which makes the audience this of aliens etc. The ident is staying with in the genre of the show it is advertising as well. Doctor Who is a Science fiction TV show so the idents and adverts with stay with in the same theme.

Audience - The audience for this ident will be the people that like Doctor who and the people that watch programs on the BBC also. The target audience for this will be 10 years old and above because the adults will be watching BBC and 10 years old is probably the average age of when someone would start watching programs such as Doctor Who.

LO1: Task 1 Analysis of audio-visual promos - Music Video

The location of this music video is in a city, as the music video goes on the character goes down into the run down part of the city, that looks a bit dead, there is litter on the floor and dusty old cars around. I think the setting is meant to look deserted and empty, which can make the character look very lonely and could have a theme of survival. Another feature of location in this music video to show the theme of survival is at the start because it looks like the character is living in a warehouse.

The costume of the main character in the music video is quite plain with a black top a brown run down leather jacket and a pair of jeans, looking at these clothes I can see that the leather jacket has been worn a lot and has got a lot of use out of it, the other clothes he wears are plain and simple I think that this connotes that he hasn't got any new ones in a long time and looks like he could have possibly found the coat on the street, the clothes he wears again makes me think there is a theme of survival.

The properties used in the video also connotes survival to the audience because he travels on a old bike instead of a car, which can show that he either is poor or there is no petrol or anything to use because of the location being empty. Another prop in the video is the car he uses to escape from everyone, when he try's to escape he was trying to get into any car which connotes he could be desperate for survival.

The iconography in this clip are the games in the arcade that the main character runs through, when the audience sees the games in the arcade it can connotes the idea of children and fun, which could be very effective to say that the music video is based on the opposite. The target audience for this video are teenagers and they could relate to the gaming in the music video. Another iconic feature in this video is the black eyes. I think that the black eyes on the people around the main character connotes emptiness and makes the people look soulless, I think that it is showing that everyone is the same and he is different, near the end of the video his eyes start to turn black like the rest of them and I think this represents people standing out in society and the main character trying to be different to everyone else.

There are different types of acting gestures in this music video, for example there is a couple kissing, a man smoking and two girls playing on a arcade game. I think that this connotes that normality in society by doing actions that are done in every day life. I think that again this relates to Normal life and I think that he is surviving against the norm.

Camera angles In this video are mostly wide angle shots and mid close up and close up shots I think that these shots are used to show the emotion on the characters face, the close ups work well with the wide angle shorts because the wide angle shots are used to show the situation that the character is in and also the location. When the audience see the location and situation you can then see how the character feels about it all the use of close ups

LO1: Task 1 Analysis of audio-visual promos - Advert

Purpose and form - the purpose of this TV advert is to sell and promote the apple software and products. The form of this promo is a advert. In this video the mise en scene shows the viewers that it is strongly based on technology, I think that it is trying to tell the audience that technology is a big part of our lives and it will get larger and larger and more important and apple want to help the audience keep up with technology by buying their products.

Content and meaning - If we look at all the different things in the clip we can see that all the elements of the mise en scene are connoting the same thing. First looking at the settings and locations in this video are world wide. I think that this can connote that apple are trying to show that people all over the world can use it and get involved. We can also see that they locations go from country to country but they also go from different settings and situations for example near the start of the advert you see a couch talking to his players on a ice rink in prepare of a hockey match. Then soon after it moves to a concert setting in china or japan, then after into a helicopter with a pilot. This is connoting that it is easy for everyone to use but it can also be used for many different and helpful things.

Two other important elements of mise en scene that we see in this clip is Properties and costume. if we look at the properties in this film you can see all sorts of professional equipment such as camera mounts and professional filming microphones etc. they are all able to mount or be used with a apple product such as an iPhone or IPad. I think that this connotes that you don't have to spend lots of money to be successful, you can do it with apple products. This is another element of selling their products. If you look at the costumes and the clothes worn in this advert you can see that there is nothing unusual or different about the clothes, as in most of the people on the advert using the products have everyday clothes on which again can connote that the products are easy to use. I think that the elements of mise en scene in this advert, all connote that they are very good quality products at a cheap budget and easy to use for everyone, therefore all they want to do by this advert is sell.

In this advert there is a different variety of camera angles, shots and movements. I think that the most popular are over the shoulder objective POV shots as if you was watching the person in the advert use the products and see how easy and good it is. Other shots that are seen in this advert are close ups to have a clear look on the quality of the product and what people are using it for. Long and wide shots are also used in the advert to show the situations and scenarios that the people are in when using these products and how they help them. The editing in this advert is very fast paced and goes from one location and situation t another very quickly. I think that it is edited this way so it keeps the audience interested and could connote that the apple products can do many different things at the same time,
because that is what viewers are seeing in the advert and all that is linked with the products.

The narrative behind the advert is that someone is narrating a story of living and is saying that life is like a poem and everything you do is a verse of that poem. it is saying going through life there are different experiences and is basicly hinting at that they are saying you will do many things in life and those things could be better if you buy one of our products for example, if you go on holiday to amazing places you can take picutres with our iphones or even saying you can make memories with your ipod listening to your favorite songs with your friends or family. Apple have used a very creative techneque by putting you into the middle of the advert and making you think that you need the products.

genre - the genre of this advert is narrative and educational, I think this because the purpose of the advert is to educate you about things you didn't know and about the products, which therefore gives off a educational theme to it. You could also say that the genre is adventurous because it shows clips of things all over the world doing different things and how apple helps with it. In the advert it goes from country to country looking at the different cultures an how apple helps them, which gives a adventurous topic to the clips and advert.

audience - the people that will be watching this advert will be normal people seeing it on the TV or where ever they are looking at a screen for example on there phone or laptop or tablet. I think that this advert targets the audience by making what ever they are doing on the advert look so fun and new compared the the viewer just sat at home doing nothing but watching videos. In this advert apple is implying that you can do all of this fun and get out your boring home with help from their products. It is showing the audience how fun it supposedly is to use and have these things such as iPhone or iPad. I think that it is also saying to the audience that you need these products, connoting that we rely on them in everyday jobs and life.

LO1: Task 1 Analysis of audio-visual promos - Film Trailer

Purpose and form -The trailer starts in black and has a sudden cut from black to a death scene with dead solders laid on the floor. This has an impact to the audience and tells them port of the story straight away. It also is done to tell the audience straight away the genre of the film. The purpose of this trailer is to make the people that see it want to go watch the film I think that the director has used different features in the trailer to make people want to see it for example the fast editing, the slow motion action shots and the sound and content. The form of this Promo is a trailer for a action film The editor has used fast paced editing and strong sounds to show this to the audience. In comparison to other Trailers it works quite well due to the same theme in editing and the same hero/villain situation. Looking at the mise en scene in this Trailer you can see that it is a action film set in ancient times in Greece.

content and meaning - One of the Features of Mise En Scene is the costume and if we look at the costume in the trailer we can see a lot of armour, this connotes that there is a large theme of war in the film. In the costume there is a couple of main colours for example brown from the leather which connotes that there was not metal armour used or they could not afford it. One of the main characters in the trailer is the solder with the blue cape. When we see a blue cape with think important or informative. This can Tell the audience that this specific solder is a lot more important than the rest and could be a leader.

The properties used in this are mostly old weapons of war for example axes and swords and shields this also connotes that the film is set in a time of war. In the trailer there are 3 main setting locations. The Battle Field, The Ocean and the City/palace of the Enemy. I think that this again shows that all the film is based about is war but It is also telling the audience that the film is quite fast pace, The only problem with this is that it could make the audience think that all the film is, is a fight and is lacking in a story.

The camera work in this trailer contains mostly close ups and establishing shots, I think that these have been used because in a trailer all you have to do is tell a short story and the establishing shots are to show what is happening and where and the close ups are to show emotion and can also be an insert shot to show important things in the clip for example the sword being sharpened. I also think that the editing style in this trailer is fast paced editing to keep in with the action theme and to keep  the audience interested.

genre and target audience - The genre of the film which the trailer is advertising is a action film which explains the properties of weapons and the fast paced editing. The target audience for this film would probably be teenagers up to adults of about 50 because the blood featured in the film might be to scary for children and I don't think that older adults would be interested as adults and teenagers at the age of between 15 and 40. The rating of this film is a 15 which means that it is too inappropriate for younger viewers. The use of slow motion and loud sounds in the trailer will appeal to the target audience. I think this because the target audience majority would be male and the hero in the trailer is powerful and the leader which is popular in the action films with this target audience.

LO1: Task 1 Analysis of audio-visual promos - Documentary

Purpose - The purpose of this documentary is is to entertain the audience and to raise awareness of what its about. it is also to inform people of the topic such as how people live in Africa and it shows a big difference to how people think about how they live compared to other people. A important purpose to this documentary is that it makes the audience think, which in turn gets them interested about watching it. And could also get the audience to think about how they could help the people in the documentary such as donating to the charities that help these people or even inspiring people to do something similar.

Form - The form of this piece is a documentary, a documentary is a factual video that follows certain people or things or events that are happening. Most of the time it is presented by someone that is narrating the footage or someone that has gone to the location with the camera crew to narrate it as its recorded. In this case there is no narrating over the documentary but i think that this can be very effective towards the viewer because you don't have anyone telling people what is happening and why you just have music to listen to and need to concentrate and think about whats on screen.

Content - The content of the documentary shows how the people live in Africa, it is mostly on the children of the village which makes the audience feel more involved with story because older people will relate the children in the documentary to their own children which would in turn make the audience think deeper into it when watching the documentary which in turn makes it more successful.

Meaning - the denotation of wide angles in this documentary can connote the that the children are alone and also the content of the documentary such as the beginning when the children are sweeping on the floor this could connote that they could be orphans and again alone in there house to defend for themselves which can be much more effective towards the target audience because it could be more emotional towards the adults watching it and could be successful due to the interaction with the audience.

Genre - this documentary is presented in a educational genre, telling the audience about how children live in different countries. Showing differences in how people live and showing how different it us to us, it is linked up with a charitable genre because even though it is a documentary and not an advert there is still a sense of sympathy that would be expected from the viewers. I think this because the footage connotes that they are less fortunate than others and need our help.

Target Audience - The target audience for this documentary would be people that have children and are able to donate such as middle aged adults with families. I think this because the documentary portrays how disadvantaged and unfortunate the children are over in Africa, and wants the audience to think into it. The adults would relate the children on the video to there own and would not want their children to be like that and therefore feel sorry for them.
